The modernization of the Seine-Scheldt network is based on a change in the management of inland waterway structures in France and Belgium, through a gradual transition from local, site-by-site control to centralized management of many structures via remote control, within Centralized Control Post (PCC). These PCCs will increase the range of services available on the wide-gauge network, with 24-hour operation, while guaranteeing safer working conditions for personnel.

Commissioned in June 2024, the Compiègne PCC remotely controls 4 sites on the River Oise at Venette, Verberie, Sarron and Creil: a total of 8 lock chambers, 4 dams and fishways are remotely managed from Compiègne. This PCC will gradually be extended to 7 sites (13 lock chambers, 4 dams and 4 fishways), with the addition of the Bellerive and Janville locks on the Canal Latéral à l’Oise, and the Montmacq lock on the future Seine-Nord Europe Canal. By 2027, this PCC will become a branch of the Conflans-Sainte-Honorine CCS, responsible for controlling the entire wide-gauge network of the Seine basin, i.e. 455km of waterways.
