On Thursday 28 May, members of the Seine-Scheldt EEIG gathered in Strépy-Thieu for their monthly meeting, at the invitation of the Wallonia Public Service. An opportunity for French, Flemish, and Wallons partners to meet in person and make progress on joint projects.

After the meeting, the members visited the funicular ship lift of Strépy-Thieu. Opened in 2002, it was the world’s largest boat lift until 2016. The tour continued to the site of Lift No. 3 at Strépy-Bracquegnies on the Canal du Centre, one of the four historic lifts listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. A compendium of hydraulic engineering works spread over a few kilometres, telling the story of two centuries of engineering dedicated to inland waterway transport.

Thank you to Dominique Simon, Pascal Moens, Benjamin Zwarts, Virginie Berginc from Wallonia, and the teams at the Wallonia Public Service for their warm welcome and for making this an exceptional visit.
This meeting took place a few days after the passing of Thierry Ledent, partner of the SPW who was involved in the Seine-Scheldt network, particularly within the alternative fuels working group. His colleagues would like to pay tribute to him here and offer their sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.
