At the invitation of the Grand Port Maritime de Dunkerque (GPMD), members of the Seine-Escaut EEIG gathered at this major port site on Tuesday 11 March. After a tour of the entire site, they held their monthly meeting in the port administration offices to review current issues.
With annual traffic of around 50 million tonnes, Dunkirk is one of the main ports in Northern Europe and the leading river port in the Hauts-de-France region. The site generates nearly 30,000 direct, indirect and induced jobs.
The GPMD is looking to the future: spearheading reindustrialisation, the port (17 km of shoreline) and its territory are mobilising hundreds of hectares of land reserves to accommodate large industries, a new container terminal and multiple logistics developments. 20,000 new jobs will be created.
The port strategy includes a river development component in partnership with VNF: in the coming years, river traffic could increase by 1 to 2 million tonnes. This is just one example of the beneficial economic and social impact of the Seine-Scheldt Network in the regions.
