Permit granted for replacing the lowest bridge over the Lys in Flanders

De Vlaamse Waterweg has obtained a permit for the construction of a new, higher bridge over the Lys between Wevelgem and Lauwe (Menen). The permit is no longer subject to appeal. Once a contractor has been appointed, construction works can begin in the second half of 2026. They are expected to last approximately four years.

The new bridge is necessary to allow vessels carrying three layers of containers to pass. The current bridge is the lowest on the Lys in Flanders. A major navigational bottleneck on the Seine-Scheldt network will therefore be removed.

Alongside the new arch bridge with a span of 112 metres, the surrounding area will also be redeveloped. This includes the creation of a water infiltration zone and a village garden. The new environment will also be safer for cyclists. The fast cycle route between Comines and Deinze will cross the bridge.

The project, designed by engineering firm Tractebel, will also enhance natural values. On the bank in Wevelgem, an additional 30-metre span will be created to connect green areas and strengthen the ecological network.

Project partners include Aquafin, the City of Menen, the Municipality of Wevelgem and De Vlaamse Waterweg. The European Union is co-financing the project as part of the development of the cross-border Seine-Scheldt inland waterway network.
