A brand new Bospoortbrug bridge spans the Brussels-Charleroi canal

In Halle, Flanders, a brand new Bospoortbrug bridge spans the Brussels-Charleroi canal. The old bridge, which needed to be replaced, was completely demolished in March 2025. On the exact site of the old bridge, De Vlaamse Waterweg nv is building a new 7-metre-wide movable bridge, reserved for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport. This new bascule bridge will rise vertically to allow large boats to pass through.

The new Bospoort Bridge is part of the modernisation of the canal to Charleroi. The canal will be widened and the bridges raised to allow the passage of boats carrying up to 1,350 tonnes and three layers of containers. In this way, we are encouraging the transport of goods by inland waterway.

This project is being carried out with the support of the European Union and is part of the Seine-Scheldt Network.
